JUAN PALOMARES
Juan Palomares paints huge paintings. Very huge. They must be, to allow you to enter them and cross over to the other side of the mirror, a curved fair mirror that takes you to a wonderland populated by deformed Alices, gelatinous, almost liquid, but insultingly beautiful. Welcome to "Pretty Pink." Juan Palomares is a voracious esthete. Already in "Cuerpos al Descubierto" (The Fresh Gallery, 2011) his interest in the plasticity of the body and the limits of desire advanced. Normal beauty does not satisfy him, and then he investigates, he seeks and he creates. It does not destroy the canons to use - after all, there is much classic in his work - but perverts and manipulates them until they are what he wants them to be, rewriting the conventions to give us a fresh and disturbing vision of what moves us inside: the New Palomares Beauty, registered trademark. (Note: Stretch, compress, bend, twist, dislocated joints, anatomically impossible positions, zombie cheeks, eyes of Candy Candy ... and that strange tone on the skin.) Beauty, yes, but also sex. Everything in "Pretty Pink" oozes eroticism - a different eroticism, if you want, but high voltage. The catalog girls of Palomares open for you, they answer each one of your filias, they are built based on the boxes that you mark. They all look alike but none is the same. And one of them, precisely that one, is yours, the one that fills your imagination and awakens your instincts. The one that you have created with your choices. Juan merely transcribes your desires to the canvas with his delicate technique and offers them to you on an inevitably pink background. Like sex. But there is something else: those immense eyes, eyes that would take a whole day to look at, are sad eyes. An infinite sadness that betrays the inner suffering of these catalog girls. The extreme thinness, the twisted limbs, are nothing more than disguises with which to hide the pain that the superficiality of their beauty entails. Posing naked is not a problem, the problem is to hide the soul broken into a thousand pieces by an overwhelming loneliness. Perversion or fun? Palomares does not give clues. Neither seeks to provoke. He is a mere reporter loaded with images of another world where being normal does not make any sense. His exquisite brush only captures what his eyes have learned to see. It is you who decides if what you see hits you in the stomach or caresses your lower abdomen. You can fall full of love or reject them, but you will not stay impassive. It will not leave you. Because Juan Palomares paints enormous pictures. A lot.Tente Bañon, February 2014.
