Summary extract of my work
(Review in the catalogue of the KAYRÓS exhibition at the Artecovi Foundation in Madrid. 2008) When one observes the trajectory of Herguim (pseudonym of Herrera-Guillén), one realizes that one is witnessing the quiet emergence of an important painter of his generation. This Madrid native, a secondary and high school art teacher, has been working diligently for years. He is a peculiar, almost strange, painter, insofar as his work rests on vigorously classical foundations, but his art, in itself, never intends to become a tribute to the past. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid, he soon became disillusioned with dilettantism and the yearning for genius. He quickly repudiated the aesthetic narcissism of contemporary art, choosing instead to make art a rigorous study of materials. And he did so in a way that was common in the history of art: through introspection. He is a classical painter without melancholy; his work doesn't imitate the past to offer a vintage product. In his working methods, in his skillful approach and the materials he uses, in his meticulous attention to drawing, it can be said that Herguim is linked to painting from the later stages of the avant-garde. But in the creation itself, in each work, we are in the presence of a contemporary artist. |
