Summary of the original work

Year: 2020
Church of San Antonio located in the San Antonio neighborhood of the City of Cali In the mid-eighteenth century, the city of Santiago de Cali, had less than 5.000 inhabitants, extending to the hill of San Antonio. In the main church of San Pedro there was a chapel dedicated to San Antonio de Padua, which was frequented by the faithful at mass on Sundays and holidays. In 1742, in view of the difficulties faced by the faithful to attend mass in the main church, the parish priest José de Alegría saw the need to create a vice parish on the Colina de San Antonio.

With the donation of 1000 patacones from the Spanish Juan de Orejuela after his death, the construction project of the church on the hill began, this was possible thanks to a land donated by Juan Francisco Garcés de Aguilar in 1746 and which was expanded 40 years later with the donation made by his daughter-in-law Antonia Josefa Vallecilla y Salazar, wife of his son Juan Antonio Garcés de Aguilar y Saa.1 The church began to build and was erected in 1747.

In 1786 it is known from historical references that the chapel had an effigy of San Antonio in the central niche, on the right an image of Our Lady of Bethlehem and on the left an image of San Joaquín and Santa Ana. In this year the chapel It was rebuilt for the first time and later in 1803. In 1944 to celebrate its 200th anniversary, a restoration was carried out.

The presbytery and balustrade steps are curved in the Baroque style. On the brick doorway the entrance arch is semicircular and flanked by pilasters. The bulrush of three bodies is entirely built in brick; in the second body the bells are in two semicircular spans of traditional Almohad style. The auction is a relatively sharp triangular frontispiece with two vases, originally crowned by a ceramic accessory (absent today).
